A 4-year-old boy from Lacey, who nearly drowned over the weekend and was in critical condition after the incident, died Sunday night at Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma, Lacey Police Lt. Phil Comstock said Monday.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner is handling the autopsy, he said.

The incident was reported at 3:55 p.m. Saturday at Diamond Head Apartments, 1510 College St. S.E. The boy's father fell asleep and woke to find the child no longer in the apartment.

The boy's father searched the apartment grounds and found the boy unresponsive in the pool, the release said.

The father got the boy out of the water and carried him to the apartment, notified neighbors and began CPR.

A Lacey police officer took over CPR until medics arrived on scene. The boy was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia where staff were able to get a pulse. The boy was then airlifted to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma where he had been in critical condition.
