A 4-year-old Lacey boy died Sunday night at Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma after nearly drowning over the weekend, Lacey police Lt. Phil Comstock said Monday. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office is handling the autopsy, he said.

The incident was reported at 3:55 p.m. Saturday at Diamond Head Apartments, 1510 College St. SE. The boy’s father fell asleep and woke to find the child no longer in the apartment.

The boy’s father found him unresponsive in the pool, the release said.

The father got the boy out of the water, notified neighbors and began CPR.

A Lacey police officer took over CPR until medics arrived. The boy was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, where staff were able to get a pulse. The boy was then flown to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma, where he had been in critical condition.
