A 70-year-old Olympia woman was hospitalized after driving her car through a 6-foot fence and down a 25-foot drop in a Safeway parking lot Saturday afternoon.
The woman was parking in the Safeway parking lot off Harrison Avenue around 12:30 p.m. when she failed to hit the brakes and went through the fence, Olympia police officer Bryan Henry said.
The vehicle landed on its top.
Olympia firefighters were called to the scene and used a rope-and-ladder system to hoist the woman out of her car. Crews also used chain saws to cut away debris surrounding the car.
A McLane Black Lake Fire Department engine arrived as backup, said Olympia Fire Lt. Dave Haag.
The woman was conscious when rescued. She was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital, where she was in stable condition Saturday afternoon, Haag said.
She was being kept overnight for observation, he added.
