Restaurant Inspections for July 10

Comments are taken directly from the latest Thurston County inspection reports, which are available at each food establishment and at the Thurston County Environmental Health Office. For questions concerning these reports, contact the health office at 360-867-2667.

Reading Inspection Scores:

– As of May 2013, Compliance Ratings (percentage scores) will no longer be given because of changes in the state food code.

– Attention should be given to the type of violation (red versus blue) and whether the restaurant has a history of red violations or repeat violations.

– Red violations are those most likely to cause food-borne illness and must be corrected immediately if feasible or according to a compliance schedule established by the health officer. Example: not keeping food at the right temperature.

– Blue violations relate to the overall cleanliness and condition of operation and must be corrected according to a compliance schedule established by the health officer. Example: floor is worn and needs to be replaced.

Black Bear Diner

Comments: Red — None noted. Blue — Soiled cardboard on cook’s line next to toaster. There continues to be maintenance issues in the overall facility. Burned-out and missing light bulbs in back of kitchen.

Italia Pizzeria

2505 Fourth Ave., Olympia

June 13: Routine check

25 red; 12 blue

Comments: Red — Employee failed to wash hands prior to preparing food after coming back from break. Blue — Employee’s open drink on base of meat slicer. Inside salad bar/food prep cooler was dirty.

Inferno’s Pizza

111 Tumwater Blvd., Tumwater

June 14: Routine check

20 red; 0 blue

Comments: Red — No hot water in bar area hand sink. Pizza oven area refrigerator had milk at 49 degrees. Cold storage/holding must be 41 degrees or colder. Blue — None noted.

Blue Heron Bakery

4935 Mud Bay Road, Olympia

June 14: Routine check

5 red; 17 blue

Comments: Red — Double-door refrigerator by oven has open gap below door seal. Blue — Sanitizer bucket not available. Inside walk-in ceiling in need of cleaning and maintenance. General cleaning, removal of unused equipment and clutter is needed.

El Nopalito

2400 Harrison Ave., Olympia

June 12: Routine check

30 red; 14 blue

Comments: Red — Person in charge and owner are without food handler cards. Two-door upright refrigerator and sandwich prep cooler were at 47 degrees. Missing thermometers for the Snapple and upright refrigerator. Most food inside the coolers is without protective covers. Blue — No soap at back kitchen sink and no towels at front handsink. Dry wiping cloths with dried-on food residue next to steam table. No sanitizer available for sanitizing dishes. Burned-out light in center of back kitchen food prep area.

5 red; 0 blue

Comments: Red — Potatoes and taco meat in steam table at 130 degrees. Must be above 135 degrees. Blue — None noted.
