Tumwater hostage situation ends with arrest, no one injured

Staff writerJuly 14, 2013

A standoff between law enforcement and a 50-year-old Olympia man with a gun who holed up inside a Tumwater gas station to talk to his former girlfriend ended peacefully after about 9 hours Sunday.

Trosper and Littlerock roads were closed throughout the day as law enforcement, including Thurston County SWAT and Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies, responded to the scene, Tumwater Police Detective Jen Kolb said. Olympia police, Washington State Patrol and Tumwater Fire also provided assistance during the day, she said.

Law enforcement personnel were dispatched to the USA gas station at 701 Trosper Road about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, where after hours of conversations with the suspect, both he and the woman safely left the building about 6:45 p.m. The man was then taken into custody without incident, and no one was injured throughout the day.

The standoff started when the Olympia man confronted his ex-girlfriend, an employee at the store, with a gun.

Another employee left the building unharmed and no customers were thought to be in the store at the time, Kolb said.

The woman, 42, of Olympia, has a restraining order against the man, Kolb said.

The two were locked inside an office in the store, and the man was in communication with law enforcement.

During the standoff, a tanker truck was left parked at the gasoline station, but eventually the driver was allowed to return to the truck and drive off with the protection of an armored vehicle, Kolb said.
