Wine, spirits and beer retailer Total Wine & More has opened at Westfield Capital mall in Olympia.

The 21,000-square-foot store occupies a portion of the former Mervyn’s space at the mall. Other retailers that occupy that space include REI and Forever 21.

The store carries more than 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 beers, including more than 1,500 Washington wines, 80 Washington and Oregon distilled spirits and 550 Pacific Northwest beers, according to a news release. It also has a "Brewery District" beer-tasting bar and growler section with 12 rotating taps of locally brewed craft beers.

Al and Luana Bauer of Olymipa stopped by the store on opening day Thursday. Green and yellow flags hung from the entrance as customers were welcomed by a bright orange Volkswagen Bug complete with wheat mohawk, advertising Shock Top Belgian White beer.

They are no strangers to the chain, which is one they frequent while staying in Arizona.

“It’s a nice adult candy store,” Luana Bauer said. "It's nice to have such a variety of things to choose from."

The store’s aisles are filled with an abundance of options — maybe even too many at times.

"It's amazing and it's almost overwhelming," Al Bauer said, laughing as he left the store with his purchase. "If you want a bottle of wine you better have a tour guide."

The couple noticed prices were overall a little cheaper compared to where they usually shop, but they said the variety is what set the business apart.

The Olympia location is the company's 96th and the sixth in Washington state. A seventh store is planned for Spokane later this year. Total Wine & More is headquartered in Potomac, Md., according to its website.

Olympia's Total Wine & More will be open 9 a.m.-10 p.m., seven days a week.
