Daniel Summerhays rebounded from a disappointing finish last week in Illinois to take the lead in the rain-delayed first round of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Madison, Miss.
Four days after squandering the final-round lead in the John Deere Classic, Summerhays shot a 9-under 63 to open a three-stroke lead. He had an eagle and seven birdies in a bogey-free round at Annandale Golf Club.
Will Claxton, Michael Bradley and Jonathan Randolph shot 66.
Olympia’s Andres Gonzales opened with a 73.
The entire afternoon group was unable to finish because of storms that hit the course in suburban Jackson. Kevin Kisner was the top player in the afternoon session, playing the first six holes in 4 under.
NON-WINNER LEADS LPGA
Alison Walshe, chasing her first victory in four years on the LPGA Tour, shot a 6-under 65 for a one-stroke lead at the Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.
Walshe needed only 22 putts to negotiate hot and humid Highland Meadows. Paula Creamer, the 2008 winner of what used to be known as the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, shot a 66 that left her tied with Lexi Thompson and Canadian Jessica Shepley.
Top-ranked Inbee Park birdied her final two holes for a 67. Defending champ So Yeon Ryu had a 68, and Se Ri Pak, a five-time winner of the event, opened with a 69.
RECORD-SETTER BEATS PECK AT US PUBLINX
San Diego’s Eric Sugimoto showed earlier in the week he can make a ton of birdies, evidenced by his record-tying 63 in stroke play.
And he did just enough to eliminate Olympia’s Cameron Peck in the round of 16 at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.
Peck led 1-up through 10 holes, but Sugimoto responded with back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th hole to regain the lead, which he never relinquished.
Sugimoto closed out Peck on the 18th hole with a birdie to post a 2-up triumph.
Earlier in the day, Peck beat George Cunningham of Tucson, Ariz., 3 and 1, in the round of 32.
FERREIRA BOWS OUT OF PNGA WOMEN’S AM
Spokane’s Chessey Thomas won the first hole with a birdie and never looked back in a 2-and-1 quarterfinal win over recent Bellarmine Prep graduate Jordan Ferreira at the 112th Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.
Ferreira made birdies at the 14th and 17th holes, only to be matched by Thomas.Staff writer Todd Milles contributed to this report.
