Mary M. Knight has hired Matt Brkljacich, who quarterbacked Central Washington in the 1980s, as its new football coach.

Brkljacich recent spent time as an assistant coach at Woodland, and also has coaching ties with John Schultz, Mary M. Knight’s principal and athletic director who was the Owls’ football coach last fall. Schultz led the Owls to the Class 1B (8-man) state quarterfinals, and will remain MMK’s principal and athletic director.

Brkljacich was Central Washington’s starting quarterback in 1984 and ‘85, leading the Wildcats to the NAIA playoffs. He ranks eighth in program history in career touchdowns (21) and passing completion (52.7 percent). Brkljacich also will teach science and math at Mary M. Knight.

Mary M. Knight joins Black Hills, Centralia, Rainier, Rochester, and Yelm as area schools with off-season football coaching changes.
