Timbers fall at San Jose

Victor Bernardez and Steven Lenhart scored three minutes apart in the second half, and the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Portland Timbers, 2-1, on Saturday night in Santa Clara, Calif.

Darlington Nagbe scored for the Timbers in the 83rd minute, but Portland couldn’t capitalize after San Jose’s Marvin Chavez was ejected in the 86th minute.

San Jose (7-9-6) moved past Seattle and into seventh place in the Western Conference.

Portland (8-3-10) lost for the second time in four games.

Union 1, at Whitecaps 0: Antoine Hoppenot scored in the 85th minute to lift Philadelphia over a Vancouver side that played with 10 men most of Saturday.

In the eighth minute, Whitecaps midfielder Jun Marques Davidson received a red card for head-butting Keon Daniel in the back.

At Red Bulls 4, Real Salt Lake 3: Dax McCarty scored on a header four minutes into extra time to lift New York over Real Salt Lake.

At Toronto FC 2, Crew 1: Andrew Wiedeman scored in the third minute of stoppage time to give Toronto FC its first home win in more than a year.

Revolution 2, at D.C. United 1: Diego Fagundez scored his second goal in as many matches to lift New England over D.C. United.

At Impact 1, Sporting Kansas City 0: With rookie Blake Smith’s goal in extra time, Montreal ended a five-game winless slide.

At Rapids 2, Galaxy 0: Hendry Thomas and Dillon Powers scored to lead Colorado past Los Angeles.

Fire 1, at Dynamo 1: Houston’s Cam Weaver and Chicago’s Mike Magee scored in the draw.
