A Seattle woman drowned in Lake Nawatzel about 7 p.m. Sunday, the Mason County Sheriffs Office is reporting.
Katiana A. Taylor, 20, formerly of Vashon Island, had swum to a buoy about 120 feet from shore when friends noticed that she was struggling and had gone under the water. They called 9-1-1 after their rescue attempts were unsuccessful.
Civilian boats with Fire District 12 and Central Mason Fire Medics searched for the young woman. She was finally located 126 feet from the dock and under more than 20 feet of water, but swimmers could not get to her.
The Mason County Sheriffs Office launched a patrol boat and the Mason County Dive Rescue Team recovered the woman about 8 p.m. and immediately started CPR. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is under investigation and an autopsy will be performed this week.
