Belfair Man Dies From Bicycle Crash

Staff writerAugust 6, 2013

A 34-year-old Belfair man was discovered dead Monday on a logging road off the Northshore Road, west of Belfair, according to a news release issued by the Mason County Sheriff's Office.

According to the release, Jared W. Shumaker, of Belfair, was discovered by a mother and her two sons who were hiking on the private road. They came across a dog barking and wanting to be followed. After following the dog a short distance, they came across the man and a damaged bicycle. They called 911, and  personnel from Mason County Fire District #2, and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office responded.

No suspicious or criminal evidence was observed, and there was no evidence that a helmet was used.

The release stated that it was apparent from evidence at the scene that the man had crashed his bicycle, and an autopsy revealed the cause of death to be head and neck injuries consistent with the accident.
