South Sound gas prices have dropped about 6 cents a gallon in the last week in the South Sound settling at an average just less than $3.76 a gallon.
The pattern in early August is different from that of a year ago when gas prices headed upward again after a mid-July low. Average gas prices in the South Sound were nearly $3.91 a gallon at this point a year ago.
Regular unleaded gas is available in the Tacoma area for as little as $3.54 a gallon (APP at 3224 South Tacoma Way) and as cheap as $3.64 a gallon in the Olympia area (APP at 1306 Fones Road). In Federal Way, the least expensive gas was available for $3.57 a gallon at the Arco station as 1600 SW 312th St. Prices are from tacomagasprices.com.
Nationwide, average prices are holding steady at $3.57 a gallon. That price is down about four cents a gallon from a week ago.
As usual, Washington average gas prices are among the highest in the country. The state average of $3.80 a gallon is seventh-highest among the states and Washington, D.C.
South Carolina again wins the prize for lowest average gasoline prices with an average price of just under $3.20 a gallon.
Hawaii had the highest average gasoline prices with $4.33 a gallon.
California prices are about a dime more on average than South Sound prices, while Oregon prices are about a penny more (but then Oregon service stations pump the gas for you).firstname.lastname@example.org
