Lacey police officer dies from injuries in ATV accident

Staff writerAugust 17, 2013

Lacey Police Officer Steve Brooks, 56, died Thursday at Providence St. Peter Hospital from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle crash on Aug. 4.

Brooks, who has served as a detective with the Lacey Police Department, died of blunt force injuries to the head, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said Saturday.

The ATV crash occurred on Brooks' property in the Black Lake area. Warnock said Brooks' death has been ruled accidental.

Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Greg Elwin said he was trained by Brooks when he started out his law enforcement career with the Lacey Police Department. Elwin said Brooks was a good friend, and his death is a huge tragedy for the community.

Lacey police officials were not immediately available for comment on Saturday.
