August 27, 2013

A 49-year-old Westport man was killed Monday when the 1978 Yamaha motorcycle he was riding was struck by a 1993 Mercury Mariner, about 17 miles south of Aberdeen.

Kevin G. Crnich was riding his motorcycle southbound on State Route 105 near milepost 29, around 9:30 p.m. with no lights on, when the Mercury, driven by 81-year-old Esther Smithlin, of Yelm, which had been traveling northbound attempted to make a left-hand turn into a private residence and struck the motorcycle.

Crnich and a passenger were ejected and the bike came to rest under the Mercury on the southbound shoulder of the highway. Both were wearing helmets.

Jana A. Edwards, 35, of McCleary, the passenger on the bike was injured and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, in Seattle.

Smithlin was injured and taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital. She was wearing a seat belt.

Both vehicles were totaled.
