An Olympia man accused of critically injuring another man after running him down in a Tacoma parking lot while fleeing a convenience store was arrested today, less than 24 hours after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Pierce County prosecutors charged Jesse Jaquez, 39, with vehicular assault, felony hit and run and forgery for Fridays incident outside a gas station at South 12th and Proctor streets.
Charging papers give this account:
Jaquez tried to buy two cans of beer with a fake $5 bill then ran from the store when the clerk confronted him. At least two employees chased Jaquez into the parking lot, where he climbed into a van.
The victim was walking behind his own vehicle when Jaquez backed up with the passenger door open and knocked the victim down. The victim was dragged underneath the van for about 40 feet.
Witnesses followed Jaquez, who abandoned his van in an alley at South 17th and Washington streets. The van was still running with its lights on when officers arrived but Jaquez was gone.
The victim suffered a broken pelvis, ruptured spleen and collapsed lung.
