Olympia police have arrested a 35-year-old felon who was released from prison two months ago on suspicion of stabbing a man in the face in his apartment building on Washington Street early Sunday morning.

The 53-year-old stabbing victim suffered multiple contusions to his face, a collapsed lung and broken ribs, Olympia Police spokeswoman Laura Wohl said Monday.

Olympia police responded to the apartment complex in the 500 block of Washington Street about 3:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a man lying in the doorway of his apartment, she said.

“He was beaten pretty badly,” she said.

The suspect was found walking in downtown Olympia covered in blood about the time police responded to the incident, Wohl said. Police arrested John Roach based on statements the victim gave to police, she added.

The suspect has a long history of felony arrests.

Wohl said police believe the suspect and the victim know each other. The victim was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital Sunday. Wohl said the man was in the intensive care unit at Providence on Monday but was improving.
