Washington state’s 2014 Teacher of the Year is Katie Brown of Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham.
Brown received the award during a ceremony Monday afternoon at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. She will go on to compete for the National Teacher of the Year honor, which will be awarded in April in Washington, D.C. Jeff Charbonneau of Zillah High School was the 2013 National Teacher of the Year.
Brown also will attend Space Camp next summer and will complete a collection of teacher tales that will be shared with groups such as state legislators and educational leaders.
The other regional finalists for the state award were: Laura Currie of Centennial Elementary School in Olympia; Jeffrey Dunn of Deer Park High School; Joshua Schlegel of Harrison Middle School in Sunnyside; Sheila Stuhlsatz of Kalama Middle/High School; Eric Samson of Central Kitsap Junior High School in Silverdale; Amy Abrams of Northwood Middle School in Kent; Bernice Hanan of Chiawana High School in Pasco; and Matthew Brewer of Soap Lake Middle/High School.
