Staff writerSeptember 25, 2013

A 17-year-old boy was about to clean his father's .45 caliber handgun at a residence on Rich Road SE Tuesday night when he shot himself in the foot, according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was taken to an area hospital and was treated and released, Thurston County Sheriff's Sgt. Ray Brady said. The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m.

"He was getting ready to clean his father's gun in the house," Brady said. He advised that he thought the gun was unloaded, but when he let the slide go and pulled the trigger, the gun went off, causing a through and through injury to his foot."
