GOP dead-enders on path to self-destruction

The OlympianOctober 2, 2013

Don’t believe the falsehoods being told by U.S. House Republicans. The partial shutdown of the federal government has nothing to do with curtailing spending or the national deficit. Tea party Republicans are waging a symbolic battle over the Affordable Care Act.

It’s a lie when GOP House Leader John Boehner says Americans don’t want Obamacare. A year ago, Americans had a clear choice: Obama, who staked his re-election on passage of the health reforms, or Mitt Romney, who promised he would repeal the Affordable Care Act on his first day in office.

Americans chose Obama.

Thousands of South Sound federal government employees are sitting home today, wondering when this sham will end. The shutdown is harming their families and affecting economies from Thurston County to the international markets.

Congress is approaching single-digit approval in the polls. Moderate Republicans should be standing up for Americans and against their colleagues from the far right.

We believe this grossly irresponsible behavior will backfire on them in next year’s midterm elections. If not, it will firmly establish the dynamics for a true do-nothing Congress, which at this time appears to be the endgame.
