State Republicans should support I-522 on labeling

YelmOctober 7, 2013

It is disappointing to see the Washington state Republican Party represent the six out-of-state multinational corporations that are funding the opposition campaign to I-522 (Monsanto, DuPont Pioneer, Groceries Manufacturers Association, Bayer Cropscience, Dow Agrosciences, and BASF) instead of its local constituents. I would like to think the Republican Party would embrace I-522, because it is consistent with their platform of high family values.

This initiative will empower shoppers with more information about what is in the food we eat and feed our families. It’s about mandating consistency in food labeling. Labeling for nutritional information is already required for foods impacted by 522. Therefore, it will only update labeling that is already a routine part of business for the food industry, and it’s not likely to increase the cost of food for consumers.

More than 64 countries already require mandatory labeling for GMO content, and several states have already passed or are considering mandatory labeling requirements. This initiative should not require special packaging. It’s about protecting our export markets. Initiative 522 was modeled on the most common global GE labeling standards, ensuring that our farming and fishing industries maintain their international export status.

Washington state Republican Party, have you forgotten that to be a conservative means to preserve and conserve?
