BOYS TENNIS

Capital sweeps singles, doubles titles at district: Capital sophomore Ty Gentry defended his singles title and the pair of Travis Miller and Doug Doenges won the doubles title at the final day of the 2A District IV tournament at the Capital City Tennis and Athletic Center Wednesday.

Gentry swept Tumwater’s David Granero in the singles final, while Doenges and Miller topped Black Hills’ Jimmy Do and Noah Durette, 6-2, 6-1, in the doubles final, rebounding from loss to the pair a week earlier at the subdistrict tournament.

“They are a fairly new doubles team, and each match gets better and better,” Capital coach Tom Alongi said of his No. 1 doubles team. “I’m thinking they can do great things at the state tournament.”

The top three singles players and doubles teams advance to May’s 2A state tournament at the University of Washington’s Nordstrom Tennis Center, and all district representatives are from the Evergreen Conference players.

River Ridge’s Jason Trinh earned his first trip to state by topping Mark Morris’ Riku Kusakabe, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in a winner-to-state, loser-out singles match while Tumwater’s Ryan Gudbranson and Nathan Eliason earned the final doubles berth.

BOYS GOLF

Capital sends 3 to state, Black Hills' Shier second: Capital’s Gabriel Barnes, Brent Chapin and Joel Christopher all placed in the top 10 at the final day of the 2A District IV tournament at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis to earn a state spot in May’s 2A state tournament at Chambers Bay. The top 16 golfers advance to state.

Barnes (155), Chapin (159) and Christopher (160) placed fourth, sixth, and ninth, respectively, to lead the Cougars. Hockinson’s Diego DeLaTorre shot a sizzling final-round 3-under-par 68 to win the individual title by 13 strokes over Black Hills’ Jake Shier, 138 to 151.

Joining Shier at state from Black Hills is teammate Ryan Waldron, who placed tied for 11th (161).
