Update: A hitchhiker who was killed Friday morning after trying to cross state Route 12 has been identified as Joseph A. Myer, 24, of Olympia, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Earlier: A pedestrian who was hitchhiking on state Route 12 east of Forstrom Street SW is dead after he tried to cross the road and was struck by a semi-truck about 10:15 a.m. Friday.

The hitchhiker was walking east on state Route 12 when a car headed west pulled over to offer the man a ride, Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill said. The man walked directly into the path of a semi-truck that was also headed east, Gill said.

The driver of the semi-truck was unhurt, Gill added. The driver is not at fault, and there are multiple witnesses to the incident, he said. Gill did not have information on the deceased man's name or age.
