State’s clam dig schedule runs until New Year’s

The Daily World (Aberdeen)November 2, 2013

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced a tentative clam dig schedule for December that includes three openings and 15 total days of digging through New Year’s Eve.

Here are the digging days and tide information for the coming week:

Sunday, 6:16 p.m.; -1.1 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks.

Monday, 6:59 p.m.; -1.3 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks.

Tuesday, 7:45 p.m.; -1.3 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors.

Wednesday, 8:33 p.m.; -1.2 feet; Twin Harbors.

Thursday, 9:24 p.m.; -1.2 feet; Twin Harbors.

Friday, 10:19 p.m.; -0.3 feet; Twin Harbors.

The schedule for December won’t be finalized until marine-toxin tests before each dig confirm clams are safe to eat, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager.

“Although these digs are still tentative, tide levels look good,” said Ayres. “That’s especially true for the eight-day dig beginning Nov. 30, and for the New Year’s Eve dig.

In past years, as many as 20,000 people have dug razor clams on New Year’s Eve, Ayres said.

Diggers may take 15 razor clams per day, according to state law, and must take the first 15 they dig.

All diggers age 15 or older are required to have a 2013-14 fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach.

The department says large red signs are placed on the beach approach roads where beaches closed to digging. If diggers are observed on those beaches, they might be legal tribal harvesters and not an indication that nontribal recreational harvest is open, the department said.

Dates, beaches and evening low tides for the proposed end-of-the-year digs are as follows:
