Suspect in Olympia pursesnatching arrested Friday

Staff writerNovember 4, 2013

Sheriff's deputies arrested a 23-year-old man Friday evening after he allegedly knocked over a 61-year-old woman in the Izzy's restaurant parking lot in the 3500 block of Pacific Avenue Friday and stole her purse.

Olympia police were able to identify a suspect based on witnesses' descriptions of the suspect and his getaway vehicle after the 5 p.m. robbery, Olympia police spokeswoman Laura Wohl said.

Thurston County sheriff's deputies located the suspect's vehicle in the 6100 block of Hogan Drive and arrested him there, Wohl said.

The victim had just got out of her car with her daughters and a granddaughter when she was knocked over by a suspect who ripped her purse from her shoulder, Wohl said. The victim sought medical attention after the robbery, but Wohl was unsure of the extent of her injuries.

The suspect will have his first appearance in Thurston County Superior Court Monday afternoon. The suspect in the strong-arm robbery of the 61-year-old woman's purse was a victim in Tacoma shooting in July, in a McDonald's parking lot on South 38th Street, Tacoma Police Officer Loretta Cool said Monday.

During the July shooting in Tacoma, the man was shot in the hip when two transients tried to rob him and a woman who were in a car. The two transients had arranged to purchase pills from the couple, but instead robbed them and shot the driver, the same man who was arrested Friday in the Olympia robbery.
