Are you an aspiring writer with something to say about the South Sound community?

The Olympian’s 2013 Board of Contributors is nearing the end of its 12-month term. That means we are looking for a handful of local writers to form the 2014 board, taking turns writing a weekly column.

Each contributor will write between eight and 10 columns during the year.

Next year’s writers will form the 11th Board of Contributors since its launch in 2004. By offering space to local writers, we create a place where fresh South Sound voices can add to the community conversation.

We are seeking people who have opinions and won’t be shy about sharing them with more than 200,000 readers in print and online. Your words and ideas will reach in excess of 60 percent of Thurston County residents.

The best contributors focus on local issues, or how local events play into the national and international context, and share their unique perspective on the topics important to the community and the region.

The Olympian will be selecting the 2014 Board of Contributors for the broadest and most diverse representation of our community from the applications we receive.

Are you a neighborhood activist, a student, a homemaker or a state worker? Do you have knowledge and/or passion for education, the environment, spiritual life or health care? Are you conservative, liberal or somewhere in the middle?

We want to hear from all of you.

The goal is to form a Board of Contributors that represents all walks of life and that will add to the richness and diversity of the South Sound community.

We are inviting people to send us self-nominations today. There’s no form to fill out, just a simple application process.

Here’s how to apply: Send us a cover letter telling us about yourself and why you want to write a newspaper column. Provide two fresh writing samples of 650-750 words.

Email your letter and samples to: Board of Contributors at letters@theolympian.com. The deadline is Dec. 13.

We look forward to what you have to say.

The Olympian is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
