After posting two home victories to open up Great Northwest Athletic Conference play last weekend, including an upset over a top-25-ranked team, Saint Martin's women's basketball team was named the GNAC's team of the week, announced by the conference office Monday.
The Saints beat Central Washington 64-49, on Thursday, then downed No. 18-ranked Northwest Nazarene, 61-56, to start 2-0 in GNAC play for the first time since 2004-'05.
The win over NNU was sparked by junior Angela Gelhar's career-high 27 points, including a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line. SMU's win snapped an 11-game losing skid to the Crusaders.
"It was really big for our team in terms of confidence," Saints coach Tim Healy said in a press release." We came into that game with a blank-slate attitude, that it was just one game and that had nothing to do with the past."
The Saints (5-3 overall) travel to Hawai'i this weekend with a pair of games against Hawai'i-Hilo Friday and Saturday (both 7 p.m. tip-offs). GNAC play resumes with a home date against Western Oregon on Jan. 4.
