New Volkswagen sales return to the Olympia Auto Mall Wednesday as the I-5 Auto Group opens Volkswagen of Olympia on Cooper Point Road next to Topping Volvo.
The dealership’s arrival follows Hanson Motors ending its relationship with Volkswagen last January.
Hanson Motors sold new Volkswagens and offered warranty service for those vehicles for 39 years, and still sells and services used Volkswagens, said Tacoma attorney Ron Coleman, who speaks on behalf of the dealership.
Volkswagen of Olympia was scheduled to open its service center at 7 a.m. and its sales office at 8 a.m., spokesman Chad Taylor said.
The I-5 Auto Group, which is based in Chehalis and owned by Heidi Pehl, operates several dealerships selling multiple brands, including Ford and Toyota vehicles.
Taylor said Pehl loves the Volkswagen brand and viewed the new dealership as a huge opportunity, knowing that the auto mall is a big driver of customer traffic.
“It’s a great place to sell cars,” Taylor said.
Volkswagen of Olympia was to open with about 130 new vehicles and more than 60 used Volkswagens. The dealership will sell Volkswagen’s 11 models, including the Jetta and Passat, Taylor said.
About 25 people will work for the dealership, including some faces in the service department who will be familiar to past Volkswagen customers, said Gary Imler, service consultant for Volkswagen of Olympia.
Auto Mall executive manager Alicia Nelson could not be reached Tuesday. Volkswagen of Olympia will be the 12th dealership at the mall.
Sales of new and used vehicles were on the upswing in Olympia, according to first-quarter state Department of Revenue retail sales data, the most recent data available.
In the year-over-year first-quarter period, sales of new and used vehicles in Olympia rose to $77 million from $68 million, the data show.Rolf Boone: 360-754-5403 firstname.lastname@example.org
