‘Free’ parking downtown included a meter violation

OlympiaDecember 22, 2013

The city of Olympia must not have read your Nov. 27 article, “Free parking offered Thursday and Friday in downtown Olympia.” According to the article the city will also offer free holiday parking from Dec. 12-24.

This did not prove to be the case. I was ticketed on Columbia Street for not paying for parking Dec. 13 when I was downtown shopping. My violation: “expired meter.” So my $15 ticket would not technically represent free parking.

I could not be the only person who was a victim of this oversight by our city meter man or lack of clarity as to what the city actually means by “free parking.” So I call on the City Council to step up and pardon all parking meter violations from Dec. 12-24 and direct the appropriate city staff to clearly define what “free parking” really means to downtown shoppers.
