Transient found dead Friday in tent in wooded area in Olympia

Staff writerJanuary 3, 2014

Olympia police do not suspect foul play in the death of a 40-year-old man who was found about 11 a.m. Friday morning in a tent in a wooded area of a homeless encampment between Interstate 5 and Henderson Boulevard.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said he would not release the man's name Friday, because his next-of-kin has not been notified of the man's death yet. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon, Warnock added.

Olympia Police Department spokeswoman Laura Wohl confirmed Friday that the deceased is believed to be a transient with no fixed address.

Warnock said it is too early to speculate on cause and manner of death, but investigators found drug paraphernalia, specifically, hypodermic needles, in the tent.
