It’s hard to believe that at one time...

January 9, 2014

Once there was a time when we didn’t know the earth is alive and the sky is inside us. Yes, child, it’s hard to believe.

Once there was a time when men thought that women were property, when people with light skin looked down on people with dark skin, when men who loved men, and women who loved women hid their love, for if their love was known they were beaten and abused. Child, this is hard to hear.

There was a time when the homeless and sick of heart wandered the streets without a breath of hospitality. There was a time when men believed that they could own the land and take from the earth whatever they desired.

There was even a time when we committed mass murder in the name of freedom. It happened every day, and we just looked the other way, or distracted ourselves with games.

Yes, child, I know, I know, it is painful to hear, but there was a time when a few of us lived in great luxury, devouring the fruits of the labor of the poor.

Yes, child, once there was a time when we didn’t know the earth is alive and the sky is inside us.
