If property is worthless, is property tax a zero?

East OlympiaJanuary 21, 2014

Do you have an undeveloped residential lot in the City of Olympia? Is city sewer unavailable? Is it under an acre? If you answered yes to all three questions — bingo! — you may be eligible to save money on Thurston County property taxes.

Lots as described are required to connect to city sewer regardless of the distance and cost, possibly making the market value of your lot zero. The city is considering someday changing this little-known 2006 ordinance, but in the meantime you can request a change at the county assessor’s office to save on taxes.

Good luck fellow property owners.
