PoliBuzz: Congressmen Kilmer and Heck pass 'chick pic' (it's not what you might think)

U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer of Gig Harbor hands fellow freshman Rep. Denny Heck of Olympia the painting that traditionally hangs in the office of the newest member of the Washington congressional delegation.

U.S. Reps. Derek Kilmer and Denny Heck today continued an initiation rite of sorts begun by former Congressman Joel Pritchard.

Reports seem to vary on the origins of the Chick Pic – it was either a gift to Pritchard after he won election to the U.S. House in 1972 or something he himself picked up for $50 or 50 cents. What is known is that the painting has made the rounds of Washington state delegation for 40 years.

The rules of the Chick Pic mandate that it be passed along to the newest member of the state congressional delegation, with newbies elected the same year splitting their time (sentence?) with the chick.

Heck's spokesman says the painting will "hang proudly in the D.C. office. An exact location is still TBD, but there's a nice blank wall above the photocopier it could brighten up."
