Olympia police arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence early Friday morning after he allegedly struck and snapped a power pole in the 900 block of Black Lake Boulevard, near Capital Mall Drive.

Olympia police responded to the scene about 12:45 a.m. on a report of live wires down in the street, Olympia police spokeswoman Laura Wohl said. The downed wires resulted in outages for several area households after the crash, Wohl said.

The driver fled the scene after the crash, Wohl added. However, police examined pieces of the crashed vehicle that had been left at the scene. Another Olympia officer spotted a vehicle with heavy damage consistent with colliding with a power pole, Wohl added.

The officer tracked the vehicle to an Olympia residence, and pieces of the crashed vehicle from Black Lake Boulevard matched the damaged vehicle that was spotted by the officer, she said.

The driver was arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence after the 36-year-old man took registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.147 and 0.162 during his Breathalyzer test, Wohl said.
