Olympia man jumps from Trosper Road overpass onto Interstate 5 Tuesday

Staff writerFebruary 4, 2014

A 23-year-old Olympia man who jumped from the Trosper Road bridge over Interstate 5 in Tumwater Tuesday afternoon was being treated for serious injuries at Providence St. Peter Hospital, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The man was sitting on the edge of the overpass facing the southbound I-5 traffic below when he jumped about 2:45 p.m., Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill said. A oncoming motorist who saw what was about to happen stopped in time, and was able to avoid the man, Gill added.

Gill said troopers have interviewed multiple witnesses who indicate that the man jumped from the overpass, and was the only pedestrian there at the time. One southbound lane of I-5 was closed to traffic for about 10 minutes as an ambulance drove up and took the man to the hospital, Gill added.

The man was seriously injured, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Gill said.
