Walmart plans to open small-format grocery store in Lacey

Staff writerFebruary 5, 2014

Walmart plans to open a small-format grocery store in Lacey at Yelm Highway and Parkside Drive, opposite Capitol City Golf Club, the company announced Wednesday.

The new store, which is expected to open in early 2015, will measure 42,000 square feet and employ 65. It also will have a pharmacy.

Walmart introduced its "neighborhood market" store model in 1998 and now operates 300 throughout the country, including in Vancouver, Wash., Bellevue and Lynnwood.

Walmart also operates a supercenter store in Lacey at 1401 Galaxy Drive N.E.

A temporary hiring center for the new store will open in late fall, and construction is expected to create 50 to 75 jobs, according to a news release.
