Lawmakers in Washington are considering whether to end an exemption in state law that allows Christian Scientists to withhold medical care from their children for religious reasons.
Generally, not providing a sick or injured child with medical care counts as neglect, and could result in prosecution. But not for Christian Scientists, who are granted an exception in state law to provide their children with religious treatment instead of standard medical care.
Prosecutors in the state would like to see that change.
