A Tacoma-area man was arrested today on suspicion of killing his 2-year-old daughter in her bedroom.

The 26-year-old man called 911 about 11 a.m. and told dispatchers what he'd done. When Pierce County sheriff's detectives arrived at the Woodmark apartment, 2425 96th St. S., they found the man trying to kill himself.

"He had a rope tied around his neck and his oxygen was cut off, we cut him down," sheriff's spokeswoman Ed Troyer said.

The man had returned home Tuesday night after being involuntarily committed at a mental hospital last month, Troyer said.

Deputies were called to the couple's apartment Jan. 11 after the man allegedly threatened to kill his wife of four years after finding social media messages he disapproved of. He allegedly tried to hang himself after that incident, prompting the involuntary commitment.

It’s unclear how he killed his daughter, who turned 2 last week.

The little girl’s mother arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. and screamed, “That’s my daughter!” as a chaplain rushed to comfort her. She then collapsed on the ground.
