Downtown resident welcomes new shelter

OlympiaFebruary 16, 2014

I live at the Boardwalk senior apartments. I love this diverse and vibrant community. We live across from the Union Gospel Mission. Three times every day I walk my dogs. I have never felt threatened or unsafe.

I give what I want and smile and say “hi” to all. I look into young, frightened eyes with dark circles under them. I look into old, dazed, confused mentally ill faces. I see cold human beings getting out of their cars after a night spent there.

I think that these folks come from families that can no longer enable their addictions, or have no family at all. Folks that have suffered loss of job, home, family.

I welcome the People’s House. A place where basic needs of warmth, shelter, help and unconditional love will be provided these souls that “there but for the grace of God go I.”
