5 local teams seek state berths at regionals this week

Staff writerFebruary 25, 2014

District basketball season is over, and five South Sound teams — three girls’ and two boys’ — can qualify for state tournament berths with victories in regional games, which will be played Friday and Saturday.

Unlike the previous two years, when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association pre-determined regional tournament sites, the regional locations were assigned Sunday to prevent teams from playing on their home floors and to reduce overall travel mileage.

Timberline opens the Class 3A boys regional at 6 p.m. Friday at Bellevue College against Eastside Catholic (20-5). A win sends the Blazers (13-11) into the 3A state tournament at the Tacoma Dome for the second straight year. Timberline last made consecutive state appearances in 1980-81.

The four other games involving South Sound teams are on Saturday. In all-local matchups at Puyallup High School, the Black Hills girls face White River at 6 p.m., and the River Ridge boys play White River at 8 p.m.

Tumwater High School will play host to three girls’ regional games Saturday: W.F. West vs. Bellingham at 2 p.m. in 2A, Mary M. Knight vs. Tulalip Heritage in 1B, and Montesano vs. King’s in 1A.
