Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday announced the signing of central midfielder Gonzalo Pineda, a veteran of the Mexico national soccer team and Mexico’s Liga MX.

“Gonzalo is an experienced player who can control a game from midfield,” coach Sigi Schmid said in a club news release. “His left foot and vision on the ball will help us in key situations.”

Pineda, 31, has 244 appearances with five Mexican clubs, recording 10 goals and 15 assists. He also has 32 caps with the national team.

He played in 2012-13 with Queretaro of Liga MX.

Pineda has been training with the Sounders for about a month and will be added to the roster pending receipt of his visa and international transfer clearance.

Seattle begins its Major League Soccer season at noon Saturday, meeting Sporting Kansas City at CenturyLink Field.
