Family Support Center operates the largest homeless family shelter in Thurston County, and it needs overnight hosts from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Volunteers receive three hours of training with staff, always host with another volunteer, and have direct access to staff via phone. Loving Hearts needs hands is a crochet and knitting group that makes items for charities that benefit babies, cancer patients, and men and women in shelters. The group needs more people to knit and crochet. The group meets 1:30-3 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. the third and fourth Mondays of the month at First Baptist Church, 428 Cota St. W., Shelton. Sea Mar community health center needs volunteers at its Olympia Clinic to help with administrative duties, maintain its community garden, make educational displays and community outreach. Stop by the clinic at 3030 Limited Lane, call 360-704-7574 or go to seamarchc.org to learn more.

The American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter needs volunteers to support military service members and military families with emergency communications and casework services. Call 360-352-8575.

thurston county needs citizen volunteers to serve on advisory boards, committees, and commissions. These groups meet regularly and make recommendations on issues to the Board of County Commissioners. Call Danielle Westbrook, 360-786-5414, for details.

The Thurston County Amateur Radio Emergency Service team needs volunteers who want to help their neighbors and the community during disasters, and who enjoy or are interested in learning about ham radio. Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center needs volunteers to process used eyeglasses to be used in missions locally and around the world. Duties might include sorting and washing. Lensometer technicians are also needed to read lens prescriptions for labeling and bagging. Three-hour shifts are available at various times. Call 360-923-2075 and leave a message.

GIRL SCOUTS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON has many girls in Thurston County interested in Girl Scouts but needs adult volunteers, particularly to work with Brownie Girl Scouts in grades 2-3. The Center for natural lands management needs volunteers on Tuesdays and the second Saturday of each month to gather at a South Puget Sound prairie preserve to do critical environmental restoration work. Activities range from burning brush piles and planting native wildflowers and grasses, to collecting native plant seeds and cleaning. Call 360-570-0762 or email ssvolunteers@cnlm.org to volunteer.
