Thurston unemployment rises to 6.8 percent in January

Staff writerMarch 11, 2014

Thurston County unemployment rose to 6.8 percent in January from 6.5 percent in December, the state Employment Security Department announced Tuesday.

It is not unusual for the jobless rate to be higher in January because the holidays have come to an end, resulting in cuts to seasonal hiring.

Although the jobless rate was higher in January, it still is lower than the year-ago Thurston County jobless rate of 8.1 percent.

Regional jobless rates for January, not seasonally adjusted:

-King County (Seattle, Bellevue): 5.4 percent

-Kitsap County: 6.4 percent

-Thurston County: 6.8 percent

-Pierce County: 7.7 percent

-Mason County: 9.4 percent

-Lewis County: 10.9 percent

-Grays Harbor County: 11.6 percent
