Family Support Center The Family Support Center operates the largest homeless family shelter in Thurston County, and it needs greeters to work from 5-7:30 p.m. and overnight hosts to work from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. nightly. Volunteers receive three hours of training with staff, always host with another volunteer and have direct access to staff via phone. Loving Hearts is a crochet and knitting group that makes items for charities that support babies, cancer patients, and men and women in shelters. It needs more people willing to knit and crochet. The South Bay Fire Department needs volunteer receptionists to provide clerical support, answer telephones and act as customer service representatives for the district secretary, fire chief and staff. Volunteers work at the district headquarters’ front desk and are the first contact with visitors. Shifts are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1-5 p.m. Volunteers receive a $20 stipend for each shift.
