A recent editorial mentioned the closing of the Wind Up Here toy store. I am one of those responsible for its demise.
In July, 2010, I wrote a letter to the owners of three favorite downtown businesses, Wind Up Here, Orca Books and Browsers Books, with copies to the Olympia mayor and Chamber of Commerce president, of my decision to no longer shop downtown Olympia after 335 free parking spots were removed.
When politicians banned plastic bags in Olympia and Tumwater, I stopped grocery shopping there. If Lacey continues this trend, I will add Lacey to my list.
Don’t get me wrong – I hate plastic bags. I refuse to shop at any Walmart because they only use plastic bags, but the choice of paper or plastic should be mine, not some Mommy Government politician. The politics of the city leaders in Olympia, Tumwater and Lacey is killing local business. I can easily shop in Montesano, Shelton, Chehalis or Elma with free parking and no Mommy Government hassles.
I will likely buy my next new car in Aberdeen or Centralia to prevent putting my $1,000 sales tax in the pockets of the anti-business politicians of Thurston County. Chamber of Commerce. Your choice is simple: make your local political leaders customer friendly or watch more of us out-of-towners spend our money elsewhere.
