Jobless rate higher, but hey, Domino’s is hiring

Thurston County’s jobless rate inched higher in February, rising to 7.4 percent last month from a revised rate of 6.6 percent in January, according to state Employment Security Department data released Tuesday.

But the increase was no cause for alarm because the county still added jobs in the January to February period, regional economist Jim Vleming said.

Thurston County added 200 jobs in the period, with gains shown in leisure and hospitality, and professional and business services. It also was an improvement over last year when the number of jobs created between January and February 2013 fell by 100 jobs.

But the jobless rate went up anyway because the total labor force also grew, he said.

“More people were looking for fewer jobs,” Vleming said.

He expects the county’s jobless rate to fall as spring arrives, producing more seasonal work.

Some employers are hiring now.

Domino’s Pizza is hiring 500 delivery drivers, managers and assistant managers Wednesday to fill staff vacancies at its 79 Western Washington stores.

If Domino’s doesn’t interest you, Saint Martin’s University in Lacey is set to host a free career and internship fair, 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. April 8 at Marcus Pavilion, 5300 Pacific Ave. SE, Lacey.

The event is co-sponsored by The Evergreen State College and will feature about 100 employers.

King County (Seattle, Bellevue): 5.4 percent.

Kitsap County: 7.1 percent

Thurston County: 7.4 percent

Pierce County: 8.3 percent

Mason County: 10.2 percent

Lewis County: 11.7 percent

Grays Harbor County: 12.3 percent
