A Seattle police detective has fatally shot a man suspected of robbing a bank Thursday morning.

The shooting happened around 11:45 a.m. during a confrontation that took place while police were searching for the suspect near Viretta Park.

Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson said a detective in the department’s robbery unit spotted the suspect in the yard of a home around 11:45 a.m. The suspect was armed with a knife, he said.

Jamieson said the armed man ”presented a threat” with the knife and the detective fired, hitting the man. He died at the scene.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the suspect had lunged at the detective.

The detective has not been identified.

The shooting occurred in the 100 block of 39th Avenue East, police said.

The robbery was reported around 9:15 a.m. at a bank near East Madison Street and McGilvra Boulevard, police said. The man was reportedly wearing women’s clothing, “lots of makeup” and a brunette wig, according to police.

He left the bank in a silver Hyundai.

Police were called to 39th Avenue East and East John Street around 9:30 a.m. after the man reportedly rolled the Hyundai and was seen running off with a rolling suitcase.

The man later ditched his disguise, police said.

He was described as a white man, 5-feet-7 and 170 pounds. He wore glasses, a tan jacket and heavy makeup.
