MOUNT ST. HELENS: Monument launches new online backcountry camping reservation

Staff reportApril 6, 2014

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument recently launched new online reservation procedures for overnight camping permits in the Mount Margaret Backcountry.

Last month, the monument switched from a mail-in and walk-up reservation system to the National Recreation Reservation Service website. The monument already uses an online reservation process for climbing permits.

This is the same system implemented last year for camping reservations at Sunset Falls Campground in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

A $6 nonrefundable fee will be charged for reservations. The system aims to allow users to check for cancellations and make reservations and changes at any time, said monument manager Tom Mulder in a news release from the U.S. Forest Service.

The new service can be accessed at recreation.gov or users can call 877-444-6777.
