It saddened me to read the editorial opinon, Our View of April 6, regarding the seasonal closing of the overnight shelters. I am one of the many volunteers who have stayed overnights with these ladies who will soon be out on the streets when the shelters close. They are so vulnerable. How will they survive?
There are so many stories. Many have mental problems and need more than just shelter. Others are just down on their luck.
One older lady stands out to me. She and her husband have been married 43 years. He is handicapped and in a wheelchair so is being taken care of. She spends her days with him and sleeps in the shelter at night. She proudly showed me the locket she cherishes that he gave her, and tells of how they have loved each other all these years.
How can she manage? We must not just look the other way.
