10th CD candidate Joyce McDonald speaking Wednesday in Lacey

OlympianApril 15, 2014

Republican Joyce McDonald, who is a 10th district candidate for Congress against first-term U.S. Rep. Denny Heck, is scheduled to speak to the Thurston County Mainstream Republicans on Wednesday in Lacey.

The group holds its noon luncheon at Hawks Prairie Restaurant; the Mainstream group charges $2 admission and attendees pay for their own meals.

McDonald announced her campaign in early March. She in her second term on the Pierce County Council and is a former state House member from Puyallup.

Heck beat another Republican council member, Dick Muri, to win the seat in 2012. The 10th was created by redistricting in 2011-12 and extends from Shelton to Olympia and north to University Place, Puyallup and Sumner. It includes the Joint Base Lewis McChord and leans toward Democrats.

McDonald says she has a record of getting things done and will push to balance the federal budget “without increasing the tax burden on our country’s hard working families.’’

She also is touting her work on the council to create a flood control district and as a state lawmaker who sponsored legislation to bar texting while driving.

Heck, a politician-turned-wealthy entrepreneur, enjoys a substantial financial edge going into the race. His campaign said Friday he is filing campaign finance reports due Tuesday that show he raised $257,000 in the first quarter this year and has $822,000 cash on hand. The campaign also said Heck received more than 2,500 contributions.

Federal Election Commission reports say that more than half of Heck’s funds received through December were from political committees.
