Olympia High School will honor five individuals and five state championship teams during its fourth annual athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday night.
Doors open at 5 p.m. for the dinner, auction and ceremony at the high school. Tickets cost $30 and may be purchased at the school or at ohsgrowlathletics.com.
The inductees: longtime volleyball coach Laurie Creighton (lifetime achievement award; coached two state title teams and earned 17 top-eight state trophies); Mel Melin (Class of 1958; all-state football player, quarterbacked at Washington State before heading to the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League); Brian Boulac (1959; 10-time letterman, played football at Notre Dame); Cheryl Brandell (1984; three-sport athlete, all-state basketball
player, four-year starter at Montana); and Jessie McLaughlin (2002; all-state cross-country/track and field runner, ran at Arizona State).
The ceremony also will honor five state championship teams: 1929 boys basketball, 1984 football, 1996 and ’98 girls golf, and 1998 volleyball.
TUMWATER TO INDUCT 4
Tumwater High School’s fifth annual athletic Hall of Fame induction is May 10, when the school’s athletic booster club will induct four new members. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with a live auction starting at 7. The induction ceremony will follow.
The inductees are: Jim Madison (Class of 1965; 11-time letter winner who held state discus record for almost 30 years, played football at University of Puget Sound); Scott Gurnsey (1990; three-sport athlete, all-state football player, led Thunderbirds to two state titles); Kevin Clark (1992; won five state titles in track, led T-Birds to two undefeated football seasons); and coach Deb Matuizek (1978-2003; volleyball and fastpitch coach, led T-Birds to 1993 fastpitch state title).

TIGERS HIRE ASHMORE AS GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH
Centralia announced this week that Doug Ashmore has been named its new girls basketball coach.
Ashmore, who teaches physical education at Centralia, spent this past season as the boys C-team coach after the previous six seasons as Onalaska’s girls head coach. He led the Loggers to six consecutive state tournament appearances, including a fourth-place Class 1A finish in 2012.
Ashmore replaces Tom Kelly, a former River Ridge coach, who resigned earlier this month after two seasons.
